Volkswagen Golf R / GTI (MK7)Volkswagen Golf R / GTI (MK8)
The Golf R is a quick, grippy car from the factory, but it's set up to be safe and predictable. That means understeer when you push it, some body roll, and a bit of slop from soft rubber mounts. The good news is that the biggest improvements are also some of the cheapest, and you don't have to give up ride quality to get them.
The MK7 (2015–2021) and MK8 (2022+) Golf R are both MQB cars, so a few parts fit both. Most don't. Springs, coilovers and rear sway bars are specific to each generation, so check the listing before you order.
How the Golf R suspension works
- Front: MacPherson struts, with the engine and front control arms mounted to a subframe on rubber bushings.
- Rear: a multi-link setup on its own subframe, with the AWD rear drive unit in the middle.
- Sway bars front and rear link the left and right sides to control body roll. The balance between them sets how much the car understeers or oversteers.
- Springs hold the car up and set ride height. Dampers (shocks) control how fast the springs move. Many Golf Rs have DCC adaptive dampers, so check that whatever you buy works with yours.
Rear sway bar: the best first upgrade
A stiffer rear sway bar shifts the car's balance away from understeer. The car turns in sharper and rotates more in corners, and ride quality barely changes. If you only do one thing, do this.
MK7 and MK7.5:
- CTS Turbo AWD rear sway bar: made for the AWD MK7/7.5 Golf R and 8V S3.
- iE Apex sway bar kit: sway bar and end links together.
- Whiteline adjustable: 22mm or 24mm, so you can set how much rotation you want.
- aFe Control rear bar: two-way adjustable.
MK8:
- iE adjustable rear sway bar: for the MK8 Golf R and 8Y S3.
- CTS Turbo MK8 rear sway bar: adjustable.
- APR Roll-Control rear bar: for MK8 Golf Rs with the torque-splitting rear drive.
- Whiteline 24mm adjustable: two settings.
A front bar is optional. It stiffens the front, which adds understeer, so pair it with a rear bar. Options that fit both generations include the CTS Turbo adjustable front bar and the APR AWD front bar. If you lower the car, iE adjustable front end links let you get the bar geometry right again.
Subframe inserts and bushings: tighter, not harsher
The factory subframe bushings have voids in them, so the subframe can shift a little under load. Filling them, or locking the subframe in place, makes the steering feel more direct and the car feel tighter. You'll feel a bit more vibration, but much less than with solid mounts.
- iE subframe insert & dead set kit: inserts plus a dead set kit in one box, for the MK7 and MK8 Golf R.
- CTS Turbo front subframe bushing kit: fits MK7 and MK8.
- CTS Turbo rear subframe mount inserts: for the AWD rear, to firm up the rear suspension and drive unit.
- Whiteline rear trailing arm bushings: a good add-on if the car sees track days.
Lowering springs: the look, plus a bit of handling
Springs drop the car, cut the gap over the tires and lower the center of gravity. They're the budget way to get the look. Keep the drop moderate, especially on a daily, so the factory dampers aren't working outside their range.
MK7 and MK7.5:
- APR Roll-Control springs: made in the USA, for the MK7 and MK7.5.
- Neuspeed SofSport: aimed at a comfortable ride.
- CTS Turbo MK7 Golf R springs and Whiteline MK7 R springs.
MK8:
- 034Motorsport Dynamic+: built for ride quality as well as handling.
- APR Roll-Control MK8 springs: developed on track and street.
- ST adjustable springs: set the ride height after install. They work with or without electronic dampers.
- More options: Racingline sport springs, H&R OE Sport and Neuspeed SofSport.
Fits both: the iE performance lowering springs are made for the AWD MK7 and MK8.
Coilovers: full control
Coilovers replace the springs and dampers together and let you set ride height, and on most kits damping too. They're the right call if you want a specific stance, track the car, or want the best ride and handling together.
- HPA SHS coilovers (MK7): developed with KW and preset out of the box, so they're easy to live with.
- Racingline VWR TrackSport (MK7): developed from Racingline's race kits.
- APR Roll-Control coilovers: a wide range of adjustment. Check the listing for your model year.
- KW DDC Plug & Play (MK8): for cars with electronic dampers, so you keep the drive-mode damper settings.
Alignment parts for lowered cars
Lowering changes camber. To get it back in spec, or to dial in more for the track, look at the Racingline adjustable rear camber arms (MK7) and the Whiteline camber/caster front strut mounts. Always get an alignment after any suspension work.
What we'd do
- Daily driver: a rear sway bar and subframe inserts. They make the biggest difference to how the car drives, and you won't feel them over bumps.
- Weekend car: add lowering springs or a mild coilover like the HPA SHS or KW DDC, plus adjustable end links.
- Track car: coilovers, adjustable sway bars front and rear, camber parts and an alignment set up for the track.
